Love your Life
You may think you've got a bright, alert look on your face when your man is droning on about football, but if he's any good at reading body language, he'll know you're really thinking about last night's episode of Cold Feet.
That's because 55 per cent of communication is through body language, signals and gestures, says Robert Phipps, who teaches body language classes at SMARTraining UK. He says 38 per cent of communication is down to voice and intonation, and only seven per cent has anything to do with the actual words you use.
So can you adapt your body language to fool people? 'Consciously controlling body language is very hard,' Phipps says. 'The way you use your body is ingrained from childhood. And when words and body language don't match, it's body language that shows the truth.
'But there are ways to fake it. You can feign interest by gently nodding your head; but the best way by far is to mirror the speaker's movements.'

If this fails, Phipps recommends 'faking it until you make it', ie if you pretend to enjoy the conversation for long enough, you may start to enjoy it for real.

How do you know you're boring someone to death? If they're doing three or more of these, it's time to change the subject:
- Putting a hand on the back of the neck
- Scratching ears, eyes or nose
- Supporting the head using whole hand on one side of face
- Resting chin on a clenched fist
- Picking 'fluff' off clothes
- Not making eye contact
- Lowering chin to cover throat
- Crossing arms or legs
- Staring miles away, or their eyes are glazed over
- Smiling without showing teeth
- Narrowing the eyes
- Moving the head from side to side rather than up and down
- Keeping hands out of view
